My first new piece of the new year. It's named Homeward Bound after a trail on a gorgeous mountain in the Wasatch Range in Utah. There's a spot, winding through a grove of aspen that feels truly magical. The name also felt right because working on this piece has grounded me and brought me back to myself again after a period of creative drought. I like to think these cute little critters, a snail, a few butterflies, the eggs in the nest, the spiderweb and the mushrooms, all are coming together to make a home, to form a community, a little ecosystem in the aspen grove.
The details are what makes this piece so very special. The tiny mushrooms popping off of the tree, the iridescent and wispy white glass, contrasting with the shades of black and gray, the bright pops of color in the butterfly perched on the polypore mushrooms, and the whimsical gossamer webs...so many small moments happening in these trees. The colorful and textured glass is set within a background of clear mouthblown antique glass with its trademark ripples and pips.
The eight individual panes are installed in a vintage window frame. The frame has been carefully refinished in a warm black color. It measures 22" x 54". Brass hangers are installed for hanging. I can visualize it hanging in an open concept space to help define areas of the room, or leaning nestled in a sunny window. The hangers could be easily removed if the sash is to be installed in a window opening. It would be perfect as a sidelight in a front entry, or even custom built into a one of a kind door! Swoon!
Note: Stained glass is so special and unique because of the way the appearance shifts and changes as the light around it changes. I've included so many photos here in order to show the varying colors and textures: front lit, back lit, and something in between.
