deadwood-alive
Deadwood Alive

Deadwood Alive is a reflection on the beautiful decay in the forest. The moths and mushrooms act as decomposers, recycling the dead wood, and all of it's nutrients back to the forest while the tree stump provides a home and sustenance for the critters and fungi. I feel there is something so inspiring about he idea that new life can come from the old, that there is purpose in the decay. I think we all can use a reminder sometimes that new thoughts and ideas are possible if we can let the deadwood of old ideas feed something new and original.

The frilly mushrooms on the tree stump are the Splitgill Mushroom, I think one of the most beautiful mushrooms, and super fascinating scientifically if you want to take a deep dive. The moth is the Tiger Moth, I've taken some artistic liberties, but it is really such an incredible creature with gorgeous markings, as bold and graphic in real life as they are in in my rendering.

The corners, inside the roots are a shimmery pink clear iridescent glass, the Splitgill Mushroom clusters are shades of soft pink and cream. The Tiger Moth is created in graphic black and ivory, vibrant orange and a dot of teal. The glass used for the log design is so special, more colorful than you can see on the photos, changing in different lighting, and roughly textured for the bark ring. At the center of the tree stump is an ammonite fossil. All of this is set upon a field of such gorgeous mouth blown clear with ripples and tiny air bubbles.

The finely crafted stained glass panes have been installed in a vintage window frame. The frame came into my hands via a wonderful architectural salvage center in Brevard, North Carolina. The frame has been carefully restored and painted a soft warm white.

The window measures 23.25" x 21" (59cm x 53cm). Two small hooks on the sides make for easy hanging. I've tried to show it in different lighting, as the beauty in stained glass is the way it changes and shifts with the light.
